In the boys’ varsity race, senior captain Liam O’Connor led once again with his fourth place finish in a time of 17:29. The boys varsity squad finished fourth overall as a team, one point behind The Heights. They did, however, defeat conference foes Paul VI, DeMatha and local rival St. Stephen’s.

In the boys’ JV race, John Green led the Cardinals to a fifth place finish. Freshmen Luke Reddick and Connor Burke were the lone Cardinal entries in the boys freshman race and both managed to improve on their times from Oatlands just a week ago.

The varsity ladies raced without senior captain Aubrey Gartlan but were led once again by Junior Katie Nicochea’s fifth place finish as they placed third overall. Freshmen Natalie Irwin and Kaitlin Luzik provided depth as they finished second and fourth for the Cardinals, respectively. In placing third, the lady Cardinals defeated conference rivals Paul VI, St. John’s and Holy Cross.

In the girls JV race, Maria Manzek led the lady Cardinals with her 10th place finish.

Girls grab key road soccer win Soccer, 2-1

In May, Coach Gino Leon knew this week would be one of the critical stretches in the 2011 schedule with Holy Cross and Potomac School on the docket. Leon’s charges took care of the front end of the week with a 2-1 win in Kensington on Tuesday.

Senior midfielder Ciana Puglise gave the Cardinals the lead in the first half with a goal and senior Gabby Goddette scored the eventual game-winner to boost the advantage to 2-0.

Holy Cross would not fold, however, and after closing the gap to 2-1, continued to end with unrelenting pressure in the Cardinals’ end.  Leon  said the play of the defense was the key to the outcome. “Hannah Thomas and Helena Barber, without question, were the players of the game.  They played defense as well as anyone could hope, when Holy Cross pressed us, they kept us out of trouble. You need goals to win, but no question, Barber and Thomas were the difference in this match.” praised the Ireton head coach.

The win improved Bishop Ireton to 6-0, 2-0 in the WCAC. With the new single game conference format, the Cardinals will play 8 league games and road wins in the extremely balanced and competitive WCAC are critical. Ireton will need road wins to stay at the top of league with the preseason conference favorites, Good Counsel and Bishop O’Connell, both scheduled away for the redbirds.

Next up for the Cardinals is Potomac School. The McLean school edged Ireton 1-0 in the season opener last year and that game served as a conversation point at season’s end as the undefeated Panthers made the case they topped Ireton and the Cards upended previously undefeated and top ranked Good Counsel, bolstering the argument Potomac was the area’s top girls team.  Gametime for the varsity only affair is 4:15 on Fannon Field.

Eagles overwhelm Cardinals in boys soccer

Cardinals fall to 0-2-1 in WCAC after loss to Gonzaga Tuesday

Ireton goalkeeper Chris LaBarbera made 8 saves, one a spectacular play on a breakaway opportunity in the first half, but Gonzaga’s Eagles were too much for Bishop Ireton on Fannon Field Tuesday in WCAC action.

Gonzaga sophomore Chase Gasper got the visitors on the scoreboard with 34:26 remaining in the opening half and Matthew Ledder pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 18:30 mark remaining.  Ireton, held without a shot on net in the game, corralled the purple-shirted visitors for the remainder of the half, but the second session was a different story.

Ledder scored the second of three he would be credited with on the day, though his final goal was the result of Ireton’s Nick Galdos attempt to block his shot and the ball deflected into the net.

Senior Tim Boyle upped the advantage to 4-0 and the landslide quickly mounted to the final in the last 7 minutes of the contest.

Ireton heads out of conference on Friday to Middleburg for a varsity/JV doubleheader with Middleburg Academy, gametime is 4:15 for the varsity contest, JV to follow.

Field Hockey shoots past Bishop O’Connell, 2-0

Senior Maddy Zeigler, above, scored both goals in Ireton's 2-0 win over O'Connell Saturday to sweep the season series.

Bishop Ireton’s new field hockey team quickly figured out one very important part of the game for any Cambridge Road team, how to beat Bishop O’Connell. The Cardinals hosted the Knights for the second this season due to facility work at the Arlington school, and the results were another 2-0 win for the redbirds.

Senior Maddy Zeigler tallied both goals for the Cardinals in this contest, the second whitewash of the Knights in as many tries.  Coach Erin Simons singled out Tori Camardella, Allyn Melliza, Katie Kiesner, Kate Spata and Annie McHugh as playing exceptionally well for Ireton on the overcast Saturday morning in Alexandria.  Once again, the Cardinals dominated the play against their blue and silver-clad rivals with  20 corners to the Knights’ 4 corners as well as 21 shots on goal.  Both first year teams played a spirited game and enjoyed the competition, according to the Ireton head coach.

Bishop Ireton will return to action after a week of preparation to face powerhouse Holy Cross and newly formed programs at the School without Walls and Woodrow Wilson High School, both of the DCIAA.

Girls Soccer thumps St James as Holy Cross looms

Cardinals, led by senior Helena Barber (above), face their biggest test of the season on the road at Holy Cross on Tuesday.

The Cardinals braved heavy rains and a two-and-half hour bus ride to St James, but the game itself was far more pleasant as Bishop Ireton cruised to a one-sided 11-0 win over the Saints on Friday.

Ten different Cards scored for the visitors, including one off a corner kick and two from direct kicks. Coach Gino Leon emptied the bench early and moved players to different positions in an effort to work on different situations and experiment with different combinations while trying to keep the score reasonable.

“We have Holy Cross on Tuesday in Kensington,” commented Leon, “that will be a difficult game and important benchmark on our progress this season.”  The Tartans and Cardinals have a common opponent, PVI, so far this season. The Cardinals upended the Panthers 6-2 while Holy Cross blanked the Fairfax school 4-0 in their earlier meeting.

Gametime Tuesday is 4pm at the Academy of the Holy Cross, JV game will follow.

Cardinals smother Episcopal, 33-7

Cardinals' defense has yielded only 1 touchdown in last 2 games.

With little more than 4 minutes remaining in the contest, the Cardinal Crazies took up the chants, “undefeated” and “Coach Ver-du-chee” as Bishop Ireton wrapped up its second strong performance against a city rival with a 33-7 win over the Maroon of Episcopal. The “Migration” Saturday felt like the home game the Ireton skipper was looking for earlier in the week as Cardinal fans filled the east side of the beautiful Hummel Bowl on the campus of Episcopal.  Three quarters of the crowd appeared to be Ireton supporters, including another strong showing on the road by the Cardinal Crazies.

The undefeated Cardinals played a dominating defensive game, limiting Episcopal to only 75 yards of total offense for the day.   Early on, that defense was key as the Cardinals struggled early to find its offensive rhymn, but Coach Matt Shea’s lads, led by junior Jack Beer and senior Andrew Lutterloh on the line, backers Ned Curry and Hudson Sullivan, and Kevin Moreno, with his first interception, gave Episcopal no breathing room and few yards.  All this against an offensive line group that Ireton coaches suggested may have been the best the Cardinals have faced so far.

Ireton kicked off to open the contest and the defense quickly set the tone for the game, forcing a 3 and out series for the Maroon.  The visitors started at their own 39 and put together a 9-play drive that eventually stalled at the EHS 35, where Aurelian Guillaud punted to put the hosts on their 17.  The teams would trade defensive stands, although the Maroon went out without gaining a first down on their 4 possessions of the game.

As the scoreless first period  moved into the second, the error-proned home team would commit 7 first half penalties and two turnovers, Ireton converted a turnover that would lead to the first score of the contest.  In a dominating defensive series, the Maroon struggled to get out of their own end when Kevin Moreno picked off a Coker pass only to fumble the pigskin back to the quarterback on the return.  With a new set of downs, the Maroon’s Johnny Bond fumbled on their second play of that series and Moses Webb recovered on the Episcopal 10 yard line.

It took the Cardinals one play for Webb to take the fumble to the end zone and stake Ireton to a 7-0 lead.  After a Nick Galdos PAT, he’s perfect in that category this season, Episcopal had their brightest moment of the afternoon when DuButts returned the Galdos kick off 90 yards to paydirt and tie the game moments after the Cardinals had seized the lead.  As much as it may have electrified the home sideline, it also may have had the same effect on Bishop Ireton.

The Maroon held Ireton on the next series but again put themselves in trouble when a bad snap forced Bond to scramble on 4th down and eventually was penalized for intentionally grounding the ball, causing not only loss of yardage, but loss of down.  Ireton took over on the Maroon 9-yard line.  Although the Cardinal ground attack faltered in the “red zone”, Nick Galdos kicked his first field goal of the season from 21-yard line for a 10-7 advantage.

Justin Paige picked off another Coker aerial at the Ireton 31 and, after a two-yard loss, Brandon Price-Williams, who rushed for over 200 on the day, broke a 71-yard dash into the end zone to increase the lead to 17-7.  Episcopal tried to counterattack but when they were forced to punt with 27 seconds left, Verducci’s squad saw an opportunity.

The Cards started on their own 46 and Zingler found Price-Williams down the sideline for 17 yards before the heady junior stepped out of bounds to stop the clock.  In what may have been the play of the game, Zingler executed the screen pass perfectly to senior Moses Webb. With Ireton’s linemen and receivers blocking down field, Webb alternately sprinted, dodged, and stuttered his way into the endzone on the final play of the half to put Ireton up 23-7.  The Cardinals tried to catch Episcopal off balance with a fake kick, two-point conversion, but the Ireton pass was incomplete.

Price-Williams lost the ball on Ireton’s first possession of the second half deep in Cardinal territory, but the defense owned this day and forced a 32-yard Maroon field goal attempt that sailed wide to the left. Ireton took the ball on their 20 and, with Zingler pitching to Malcolm Westbrook, Moses Webb, and Matt McShea and handing off to Price-Williams and Webb, soon found themselves deep in Maroon territory again on the Episcopal 5 yard line before the drive stalled. Galdos converted his second field goal, again a 21-yarder, to push the lead to 26-7.

It was again three and out for the home team and Ireton would again drive into the home end of the field as the third quarter moved into the final period. Galdos would miss on this attempt from 32 yards as his boot was just wide left.

Cardinal reserve players got their turn in the game in the 4th and Kelly, Spollen, Moseley kept the pressure on the Maroon offense. Forcing yet another punt, Ireton mustered one final drive in behind the running of Price-Williams. As the offense emptied the bench, Sullivan moved from linebacker to quarterback.  Riding his running, the sophomore scored Ireton’s final touchdown on a one-yard sneak to put Ireton up 33-7.  When EHS turned the ball over on downs, the Cards took a knee to close the contest and push the VISFA’s top ranked team to a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Next up for the Cardinals is their third of four home games this season when the Wolves of Pope John Paul the Great visit Fannon Field for the first time in the young diocesan school’s history.  The Dumfries school stunned the Cardinals 27-23 last fall in the first ever meeting of the football teams.

Odds & Ends:

– Kickoff is moved to 3pm to accomodate students taking the ACT college exams Saturday morning.

– Ireton debuted an all-white road uniform, trading in the gold pants with cardinal and white stripes for the solid white breeches with white jersey on cardinal & gold numerals.

– The win was the largest margin of victory for Ireton of the 7 wins in the series, Maroon has 11 wins on their ledger.

-Cardinals are 4-0 for first time since 1998 season.

St Stephens splashes their way to boys soccer win, 2-0

The weather was wet, but the game was a nailbiter won by the Saints.

In a steady rain Friday, the Saints of St Stephens held off a strong Cardinal second half and added a penalty kick goal to capture a 2-0 win on Fannon Field.

The Saints appeared to win the field position battle in the first half with ball control and attacks to the Ireton zone, with junior James Bull tallying to give the red-shirted visitors a 1-0 lead they took to half time.

In the second half, Ireton seemed to gain the advantage for much of the play with junior Elliot Fantino weaving his way deep into the Saints end with dazzling dribbling and deft passing. Late in the contest, Fantino blistered a shot off the crossbar from the right side, one of 3 or 4 good scoring chances the Cardinals could not convert in the contest. Nick Congas, a Saints, sophomore had similar bad luck in the second frame when he beat the goalie on a breakaway, only to drill his shot off the crossbar and straight into the turf.

“We played with passion, we fought hard, it was a game I was proud of the effort of our team,” said Ireton’s Jon Norem following the contest. “I expect to see us come out that way next week as well, things will happen for us if we play like we did today.”

Cardinals return to action Tuesday when they host Gonzaga, varsity begins at 4pm.

After a season-opening setback to powerhouse Episcopal, Cardinals have duel wins over PVI, Good Counsel to open WCAC dual meet season.

Bishop Ireton ran their conference win streak to two with a 6-3 dual match win over Good Counsel at the Olney. “They were ready and aggressive after a great win against PVI.” commented head coach, Katie Sloper-Johnson.  Ireton started well, going 4-2 in singles.  First match wins of the season were #5 senior Megan Fyffe at (8-2) and #3 senior Christy Macey (8-3).

The key match of the afternoon was Monica Zakaria playing #1 senior Olivia Hogan (WCAC #1 singles finalist),  who captured her first win against Hogan, winning 9-7.  “Monica was determined and had a game plan in how to beat her opponent.  That was a huge win for her and the entire team.” praised the Cardinal mentor.
