Short handed Cardinals make a big impact at Riverbend Invitational

BJ Townley is one of Ireton's most versatile track athletes, shown here in the long jump.

The varsity track team sent a very small squad down to Fredericksburg this past Saturday for Riverbend High’s first invitational.  The girls nonetheless raced to a 4th place finish while the boys were 10th.

When McLean High School rescheduled their meet to Monday to avoid the forecasted thunderstorms and that threatening weather made it seem to most of the team that no track meets could possibly take place this past weekend.   With some quick work by coaches however, the Riverbend High School’s meet became a Friday afternoon option, after many runners had made other plans.

That didn’t stop Nicole Bond, Shannon Gordon, Ricca Graham, Illeanna Gutierrez, BJ Townley, Sam Ferrara, Arthur Stiers, and Andrew Baehre from  competing and winning a number of medals at the meet.  Nicole Bond continued to show why she is the athlete to beat in the upcoming Catholic and independent schools state championships with wins in both the 100 and 200.

Shannon Gordon was 3rd in the 100 m hurdles and the high jump.   Ricca Graham and Illeana ( Illy) Guetierrez continue to improve in the sprints, and will be very strong competitors as sophomores.

BJ Townley took 4th in the 300m hurdles after showing real character in the 110 meter highs.   BJ had come into the meet with the number one seed and was all set to validate the ranking  when he fell to the rain slicked track after establishing  a clear lead.  Instead of quitting he got up to finish the race and the junior took it all in stride.  Sam Ferrara finished 5th in the 400.  Arthur Stier finished 5th in the 800 while  Andrew Baehre continues to improve his times in the 100 and 200.
The entire time travels to Bishop McNamara this Saturday afternoon for one final chance to get “relays ready” for the Penn Relays at famous Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvannia in Philadelphia.

Saints ride a big 4th inning to 7-5 softball win

Cardinals dug a 7 run hole they could not climb out in a 7-5 setback to VISAA's 5th ranked Saints at St Stephens.

The  Cardinals lost a tough game against cross town rivals St. Stephens and St. Agnes 7-5 on Thursday afternoon.  After falling behind 7-0, a furious sixth inning comeback fell just short as Ireton dropped to 8-4 on the year.

St Stephens scored 6 of their 7 runs in the 4th inning on just 3 hits as they took advantage of 4 Ireton fielding errors.  Junior pitcher Micki Crouch struck out 10 batters and allowed just 4 hits.

Ireton rallied in the 6th with back to back singles by Crouch and Heather Pearson. A walk to Meghan Pearson loaded the bases for Katie Kiesner, whose fly ball to center field was dropped, scoring two runs.  Emily Quinn and Megan Sullivan continued the rally with consecutive singles making the score 7-5.   The Cardinals pressed again in the 7th with a triple by Crouch and a line shot off the bat of Heather Pearson which somehow found the right fielder’s glove.

“We faced a tough pitcher today and suffered through one bad inning,” said coach Terri Pearson.  “Am pleased the girls battled back after getting down.”

The Cardinals have a double header on Monday against Mount Vernon and Edison High schools.

Simmons Inks with San Diego State for lacrosse

Katherine Simmons (center) signs her national letter of intent to play lacrosse while parents Bill and Maureen Simmons, principal Tim Hamer (back left) and head coach Rick Sofield (back right) look on.

Bishop Ireton senior Katherine Simmons became the second girls’ lacrosse player to sign a  national letter of intent (NLI) this year to play NCAA Division I lacrosse when she committed to  play for San Diego State next year during a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.   She joins Sarah Rupp who will head to UC, Davis to play college lacrosse next year.

Simmons, a four-year varsity player, current team co-captain, and a returning first-team all WCAC defender last spring, is one of more than 20 players nationally who were signed by first-year Aztec coach, Kylee White.  The former Canadian national player will debut the SDSU program next year  when the Aztecs will square off in their first game ever against Coach White’s alma mater, Ohio State,  in a February 2012 gathering of teams at Stanford.

Like Rupp, Simmons played two summers for the elite Capital Blue 2011 club team under the direction of former Ireton assistant coach Katie McLaughlin. The two also played for St Stephens/St Agnes coach, Kathy Jenkins, in 2009 at the Prague Cup as part of the World Cup girls lacrosse festivities that summer in the Czech Republic.   She played youth lacrosse in the Fort Hunt program in Alexandria, Virginia.

A 3.5 gpa student at Bishop Ireton, she is the daughter of Bill and Maureen Simmons of Alexandria.

“I am so excited about this opportunity.   I really liked Coach White, San Diego State, and the opportunity to play in a new program, helping develop the traditions and things that hopefully will be part of a great program.”  said the Cardinal senior of her selection of the Aztecs.  “I received so much support from my coaches, my family and friends, I will always appreciate that.   Going to San Diego is going to be great!”

The signing marks the 4th consecutive year where two or more players graduated from the Cardinals’ program to play college lacrosse, including 7 from the class of 2009.

Strong performances by Cardinals at Wildcat Invitational Track & Field championships

Sophomore Nicole Bond continues to lead a talented group of girls runners in the current track and field season.

On a cloudy, but dry Saturday the Cardinal track team traveled down to Mountain View High School for the Wildcat Invitational and for a third consecutive week experienced strong success against tremendous public and private school squads.  Our Lady Cardinals placed 7th out of 19 strong AAA and AA Virginia teams.

Paced by our relay teams, the Ireton 4x800m relay team of Marin Nolan, Madeline Thomas, Anna Wissler and Joanna Faletti placed 5th in a fast heat that saw the winning team earn a qualifying time for nationals.  The Ireton 4x400m relay team of Nolan, Nicole Bond, Ricca Graham and Shannon Gordon placed 3rd in the meet ending relay to a season-best time of 4:17.  Gordon had a big individual meet as well earning silver medals in both the 100m and 300m hurdles, while finishing in the top 10 in all jumping events.  Bond earned 5th place in the 200m final, while Thomas finished a strong 6th in the tough eight-lap 3200m race.

The boys squad saw considerable success as well with junior BJ Townley leading the way with three medals in the triple jump (4th), 110m hurdles (3rd) and 300 hurdles (8th).  Season-leading times were also earned by Mike Andersen in the 800m (2:00) and Liam O’Connor in the 3200m (10:19).  Coming off such solid performances amidst national-caliber competition, the Cardinals are looking forward to the future with the Penn Relays, Draper Relays,  and WCAC/VISAA championship meets looming a month away.

Washington Post tabs Mondragon All Met, Yager, Collins honorably mentioned

103 lbs Elliot Mondragon is 2011 Wash Post first team all Met selection in wrestling

The Washington Post’s winter all Met selections were released April 8th and senior Elliot Mondragon was named the metropolitan area’s top wrestler in the 103 pound weight class, while classmates Elizabeth Collins, a swimmer, and hockey forward, Reid Yager were honorably mentioned by the Post’s season ending awards.

“This is well deserved recognition for Elliot” commented head coach Don Dight. “He is the first all Met wrestler in my tenure as a head coach. He has had a wonderful career at Bishop Ireton and this is a perfect way to end his high school wrestling career.”

The lanky grappler ended his four-year career with a Northern Region and WCAC championship, an Ireton and St Stephens tourney championship, a second at Virginia state championships, and a third at the prestigious National Prep tournament at Lehigh University.

Liz Collins capped her swim career at Ireton with a school record (1:06.58)  in the 100 meter breaststroke and finished 17th in the Junior National championships in Orlando, Florida recently. She captained the Cardinal swim team, was named their most valuable swimmer and will continue competitive swimming for the Tribe of William and Mary next year as a collegiate swimmer.

Reid Yager also captained the Cardinals as a “do it all”  skater for the hockey team, leading them to a second place divisional finish in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League. He represented Bishop Ireton in the League’s all star game as well as demonstrating his well rounded high school career representing the School on the highly acclaimed Model UN team.

Mondragon, as a first team selection, will be recognized at the Washington Post’s annual luncheon gala downtown in June.

St Johns, McNamara top Cardinals in diamond action

The WCAC continues to produce the most balanced, competitive baseball conferences in the area.  The Cardinals are finding that out as they move through the 2011 campaign.

First the Cadets of St Johns visited Frank Mann Field. A preseason favorite for the conference title, the experienced Washingtonians looked every bit as good as advertised as they dismantled the Cardinals 19-5 in a 6 inning tilt shortened by the 10-run rule.

The Cadets scored in every inning, 3, then 2, then a 5, 3 more in the fourth, a run in the fifth and the knockout was five more in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals never quit, however, and as the score it 15-0, Ireton staged its own rally and hung a 5 on the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth. St Johns, however, continued hitting and “turned out the lights” with their sixth inning production.

Rain complicated the redbirds next contests on Friday and Saturday.  Sidwell Friends was washed out on Friday and details remain on whether that non conference match up will be rescheduled. The Mustangs of Bishop McNamara were headed to Alexandria until the precipatation pushed the game to Sunday and changed the venue to PG County’s Boys and Girls Club fields.

The two clubs battled for 10 innings before the Mustangs found the winning run for a thrilling 2-1 WCAC win for the Forestville team.

Ireton looks to Monday and the Knights of St Mary’s Ryken headed to Frank Mann Field. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.
