Girls rout St Johns in WCAC softball

Cardinal bats were alive in Ireton's 17-0 whitewash of St Johns Tuesday

Ireton pitcher Micki Crouch threw a no hitter Tuesday at Luckett field as the Cardinals dominated St. Johns 17-0 in a mercy rule shortened 5 inning game.  The bats came alive, pounding out a season high 16 hits as they improved their record to 4-2.

Crouch struck out 11 of the first 12 batters she faced ending the day with 13 total strikeouts.  The only blemish to her perfect  game was a walk to the second to last batter of the contest.  Only two balls were put in play, a weak come-back to the pitcher and a ground ball to second baseman Megan Sullivan.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2 run lead in the first inning and added three more in the third before exploding for  a 6 run 4th inning.  Debbie Ward scored four times on three hits while Susie Rhodes went 2 for 4, driving in 4 runs.  Emily Quinn contributed a hard hit single while driving in another run.  Sophomore Sarah Howell had a pair of hits including a hard shot to the gap in right center field for a bases clearing double which ended the game.

“Micki got off to a great start today and never looked back,” said Coach Pearson.  “She seemed to get stronger and stronger as the game progressed.”

The Cardinals return to action Friday afternoon at Luckett field against Norfolk Academy and then play a double header on Saturday.

Ireton uses big second half to dump O’Connell, 20-6 in girls lacrosse

Senior defender Katherine Simmons and mates shut out O'Connell in the second half of their WCAC game in Arlington. With a slim 7-6 halftime advantage, it was the pressure, air tight defense, and shutout goaltending that led to an offensive avalanche in the 13-0 second half.

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals may have played their final game ever on Bishop O’Connell’s tired natural grass Msgr MacMurty Field Tuesday, but they determined to going out in a big way a with a 20-6 pasting of their Arlington rivals.

With construction  slated for April, it was the last Ireton visit before new artificial turf is laid on the site.   It also marked the fifth straight win in the series for the Cards, but after one half of play, it was anyone’s game on the dusty, bumpy pitch.

The Cardinals drew first blood with senior Sarah Rupp, juniors Maddy Zeigler, and Maraget Nealon troubling the Knights all day long with a combined 13 goals between them.  But it was the host white-jerseyed Knights that matched Ireton goal for goal early in the game and the Alexandrians could put no distance between the squads as the Cardinal faithful cheered uneasily in their seats as the first stanza ended with Ireton clinging precariously to a 7-6 lead.

Whatever the message to the visitors at halftime by Ireton’s Rick Sofield, it became a  night and day contrast between the first and second half.   The Cardinals controlled nearly every draw, and a season high amount of offense unloaded on the Knights.  With seniors Oliva O’Sullivan, Katherine Simmons, and sophomore Gabby Barowski on defense, the O’Connell shots on net became few and far between.  2010 all conference goalie, Maggie Covert turned away the routine shots as well as  three spectacular saves as the smothering defense blanked the home team in the second half.

Meanwhile, the defensive pressure across the field yielded transition opportunities and the cardinal-clan visitors took advantage of odd man rushes and continuous draw control to dominate the Arlington hosts.  13 unanswered goals, capped by senior co-captain Katherine Simmons’ first career goal blew open the contest.

“I have been waiting all season for that second half to come out.” said the Bishop Ireton skipper in his first campaign with the Cardinals.  “I want them to crave that feeling of playing to their potential, really coming together as a team.  That was an example of the potential of this team.”

For the Cardinals (6-3, 3-0), they remain undefeated in WCAC play with preseason favorite, Good Counsel, and St Johns scheduled to visit Fannon Field Friday.  The Knights drop to 6-3, 2-1 on the year in the WCAC.

Following the Cadets visit on Friday, the Cardinals host their traditional LAX DAY VII, with Cape Henry Collegiate School calling on the Cardinals in a varsity/JV doubleheader. Gametimes Saturday are noon and 1:30pm.   Youth games begin at 9am and continue throughout the afternoon on Saturday.

Cardinals go 2-1 in busy week of girls lacrosse

2011 Cardinal lacrosse carries a 2-0 WCAC schedule to O'Connell Tuesday

This past week has been a busy one for the Bishop Ireton women’s lacrosse squad, racking up two victories and one loss.

Tuesday afternoon the Cardinals realized their second win of the regular season by beating Elizabeth Seton 12-2.  Ireton was clearly the dominant force on the field, leading at halftime with a score of 8–1.  Kathryn Gasper brought in the first goal of the game with an assist by Maddie Zeigler. The second goal followed within the minute, this time it was Margaret Nealon’s turn with an assist by Kathryn Gasper.  Maddie Zeigler then scored from a free position making the score 3 – 1.  Points were added to the board in quick succession as Sarah Fyffe, Sarah Rupp and Eva Irwin each scored one while Maddie Zeigler scored another two.  Had it not been for a superb performance by Roadrunner goalkeeper, sophomore Ashley Peacock with 20 saves on the day, the contest could have been even more one-sided.

The second half was as spirited as the first with Ireton adding an additional four goals up on the board  With twelve minutes of remaining play Eva Irwin scored with an assist by Sarah Rupp.  The two followed up less than six minutes later with a second successful team attempt.  Margaret Nealon and Aubrey Gartlan scored the final two Ireton goals.  As was the case throughout the game, the Ireton defense stuck like glue to their opponents as numerous attempts to score by the Seton ladies were denied.

Wednesday the Cardinals fell victim to a strong Episcopal defense and fell short of the challenge with a final score of 12-8.   Though the Ireton ladies were leading at the draw, Episcopal made good use of their time in possession and scored three goals within the first six minutes of play.  BI came back scoring three goals in quick progression.  Sarah Rupp scored the first BI goal with an assist from Maddie Zeigler.  Sarah quickly followed it up with a second score from a free position. Ellie Marrin scored the third goal but it wasn’t enough as the half time horn sounded with Episcopal leading 7-3.

The second half was more even handed as each team scored an additional five goals.  Maddie Zeigler led the way with three goals and an assist.  Kathryn Gasper and Aubrey Gartlan each scored one goal and Sarah Fyffe was credited with an assist on Maddie’s final goal with just 47 seconds on the clock.

Friday evening found the girls traveling south to Saint Marys Ryken who proved to be no match for the strong effort put out by the Cardinals.  BI dominated at the draws with Margaret Nealon scoring within the first fifteen seconds of play.  Next Ellie Marrin showed her stuff thirty seconds later with her first score in a run of three.  After the first she followed up with one from at the free position and the third going in with a quick assist from Margaret Nealon,   It was then Maddie Zeigler’s turn as she sent home two goals, the second with an assist by Ellie Marrin.  The first half ended with the determined BI defense holding Saint Mary’s to three scores.  With Margaret Nealon and Ellie Marrin having each scoring an additional goal, at halftime the score was    8-3.

The second half saw Saint Mary’s held to only two additional scores, thanks largely to a spirited defense and some outstanding saves by goalie MJ Foster.  BI’s offense kept hammering away at Saint Mary’s , scoring an additional six goals.  Two were sent in by Maddie Zeigler, the first with an assist by Eva Irwin.   Olivia O’Sullivan, Megan Fyffe, Sarah Fyffe and Kathryn Gasper scored the last four goals.  Kathryn’s goal was achieved with an assist By Gabby Barowski.

The Cardinals (3-3, 2-0) return to action when they travel to Bishop O’Connell (6-3, 2-0) on Tuesday and return home to host St Johns on Friday before hostingLAX Day VII, the annual celebration of girls lacrosse featuring 4 youth contests as well the Cardinals hosting Cape Henry Collegiate School from the tidewater area in a varsity/JV doubleheader on Saturday. Gametime is noon for the varsity, 1:30pm for the JV.  Youth contests begin at 9:30am and continue until 6pm.

Bishop Ireton improves to 4-1 in busy baseball weekend

by Matt Krause

Cardinals took two of three games on a busy weekend of baseball.

It was a busy weekend of baseball for Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals.  Jake Gutman and Gonzaga’s Pat Cooney were locked in a duel on a beautiful Thursday evening to start the week, only to see the Eagles explode for 6 runs in the final frame, the Cambridge crew suffered their first setback by a 9-2 count.

The next day, Ireton pounded the Wolves of Pope John Paul the Great 18-8 in Dumfries before returning to the “friendly confines” of Frank Mann field for their third game in three days.

If Coach Mike Gallagher can be certain about one thing after five games of the 2011 season, that one thing is that sophomore pitcher Cody Hagenston will give the Cardinals a strong outing.

So far, Hagenston has hurled 14 innings of 1-run ball, including six innings of shutout ball in a tough, grind-it-out win by the Cardinals over Liberty Christian Academy by a score of 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. Hagenston allowed only five hits on Saturday while striking out six.

While Hagenston was cruising on the mound, the Cardinal bats were slowly getting started. Corey Phillips led the game off with a double, but was doubled up when Andrew Selby flew out to left. After a fruitless second inning, the Cardinals came to life in the third.

Nick Tangora reached base on an error by LCA first baseman Zach Clinton, and a Sean Boldaji single pushed Tangora to second. That brought up Phillips, who hit a sharp grounder to third, which was misplayed by the LCA third baseman, Ryan Price. As the ball rolled into the outfield, Tangora rounded third to break the scoreless deadlock. Andrew Selby walked, loading the bases.

After a pitching change, the new LCA pitcher, Steve Hueber, balked in the Cardinals’ second run. Two strikeouts ended the party, and the Cardinals held a 2-0 lead. When the Redbirds went back to the plate in the 4th inning, Pat O’Connell reached on a rare strikeout-passed ball. A Wes Jenkins fielder’s choice brought John Todd to the plate. As Jenkins took off for second, Todd lined a ball sharply into the outfield to move Jenkins to third. With two outs, a double steal allowed Jenkins to score wile Todd was called out.

The Cardinals tacked on a second insurace run in the sixth inning on John Todd’s sacrifice fly. Ben Judd came in to pitch the seventh inning, and retired the Bulldogs thanks to a nifty double play. With the win, the Cardinals move to 4-1, 0-1 WCAC.

Flint Hill tops boys, girls in lacrosse, JVs win

Senior Maggie Covert had a big day in net, but the Cardinals fell 7-5 at Flint Hill on Friday

Bishop Ireton squared off in a pair of doubleheaders Friday with the Flint Hill Huskies winning both varsity contests while the Cardinals snared both ends of the JV contests.

Ireton’s girls were involved in a defense struggle where both teams made life miserable for their offensive opponents. Junior Eva Irwin got the Cardinals on the board first  but the half ended with the home standing Huskies nursing a 3-2 lead.  As was the case throughout the contest, senior Maggie Covert made great save after great save to keep the Cardinals in the game.

Led by Naval Academy-bound Jess Fellows, the Huskies reeled off 4 straight goals in second half to pull to a 7-2 lead before Ireton’ s offense came to life with only 4 minutes remaining.

After making adjustments on the draw, BI rallied hard by scoring three goals in the frantic final minutes of the contest.  The first of the three being tallied by Catie Isham,  Maddie Zeigler quickly followed up with two more BI goals the second off an assist by Eva Irwin.

The boys encounter was a one-sided affair for the home team as the Huskies roared out to a large first half lead and cruised home to a 17-3 drubbing of the young Ireton squad. Once again, Ireton had difficulty mustering an offensive threat and Flint Hill exploited their opportunities on the offensive side of the field.

The JV teams faired far better as the boys battled the Huskies through 4 desparate quarters in a tightly contested affair, with Ireton hanging on for a 3-2 win.  The girls, meanwhile, had little difficulty in manhandling the Flint Hill youngsters in a 10-1 pasting in Oakton.

The boys will challenge WCAC”s DeMatha on the road Tuesday while Elizabeth Seton visits Fannon Field in the conference opener for both Ireton squads.  The boys face off at 3:30pm due to field availability constraints, the girls will start at 4pm, JV teams will follow in both encounters.

Crew Season Underway!

The Bishop Ireton Rowing Team opened their spring season with the well-attended Anacostia Invite against DeMatha and Seton on Saturday March 19th at the Anacostia Community Boathouse in Washington DC. With over 150 athletes competing the ten races took all morning.
The conditions were slow – with a slight tail wind that eventually turned into a firm cross-headwind – proving a challenge for all teams during the first regatta of the season.

Choppy, breezy spring day as Cardinals opened 2011 spring rowing season with DeMatha and Elizabeth Seton

“We raced well and showed competency at what we have been working on,” Bishop Ireton Head Coach Eric Gehrke was quoted as saying, “and expressed good team speed all around. Now we must continue pressing forward with our end-goals in mind and our successes and trials of this regatta behind us.”

As the Varsity Girls and Freshmen Boys won their races in convincing fashion the Varsity Boys and Freshmen Girls were unable to pull out victories. With a competitive schedule ahead and the Cindy Cole Cup against five other teams next weekend that expression of team speed will hopefully carry over throughout the Spring season.
