Ireton dumps undefeated Northwood to claim Chatlee Shootout Championship, 65-53

Bishop Ireton’s boys basketball team made its biggest statement of the young season going on the road to the greater Raleigh area and winning their first tournament in more than a decade at the Chatlee Shootout in Sanford, NC 65-53.

The Cardinals jumped off the bus on Tuesday and opened the tournament with a win over Hoke High School 66-56. They topped the tournament hosts, Lee County in their second contest 53-45, before squaring off with the previously unbeaten Chargers from Pittsboro, NC.  Antonio Rouse led all scorers in the championship game with 24, 21 of which he scored in the second half to propel the Cambridge Road crew.

“It was a great trip for us,” said head coach, Neil Berkman. “We won the tournament, which is obviously a positive, but played some of our best basketball, and bonded as a team.” The squad took the opportunity to visit Duke University, where they dropped in on a Duke women’s practice in Cameron Indoor, and stopped in nearby Chapel Hill where they visited the North Carolina basketball hall of fame.

The win gave the Cardinals an 8-3 record, 0-1 in the WCAC, but their sole loss to DeMatha in league play was the smallest margin of victory (10) that the undefeated Stags had experienced to date.  Coach Neil Berkman’s squad travels to Forestville to face a very good Bishop McNamara Tuesday, then hosts St Johns and former Ireton skipper, Paul DeStefano on Friday, Jan 7th.  Gametime is 7:30pm for both contests.

Hanafin’s 17 Leads Cardinal boys past Don Bosco, Girls Romp

By Matt Krause

Any given night at Bishop Ireton, Patrick Hanafin has a good chance to carry the Cardinals by scoring points by the dozens. Wednesday night was no exception, as the senior forward piled in 17 points en route to a 70-50 triumph over the visiting Don Bosco Cristo Rey Wolfpack.  The Cardinal girls squad opened the evening with a lopsided 66-15 win over the Wolfpack girls.

Hanafin’s first points were scored on a 3-pointer, part of a 10-0 Ireton run to open the game. Although the Cardinals were briefly challenged at times, the home standing team never trailed. Ireton led 19-10 after a quarter and 37-22 at the half, thanks to Hanafin’s 13 points in the first half.

The Cardinals were able to maintain the lead by staying out of foul trouble- committing only two first-half fouls to the Wolfpack’s nine violations. Ireton’s lead hovered at 20 points through most of the second half, with all 13 men getting playing time by the final horn.

In the scoring column, Hanafin was joined by junior Marcus Hayes with 13 and senior Antonio Rouse, also with 13 points. With the win, Ireton improves to 5-3 on the young campaign.

The Cardinals are in action again on Monday in Sanford, NC at the Chatlee Shootout tournament, facing Hoke at 6pm. They will either face the winner or loser of the Lee – Leesville Road contest at 8pm the following day depending upon the outcome of the Hoke contest.  They then head to Bishop McNamara on Tuesday, Jan 4th and  return home Friday, January 7, to face St. John’s in a key WCAC battle. Tipoff is at 7:30.

Ireton’s girls are off for the Christmas holiday, they too return to action when they host the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara on Tuesday, Jan 4 in a JV/varsity doubleheader. Game times are 5 and 7pm.

Lions Dump Cardinals in Girls WCAC home opener 46-26

It might have been a “sign” when Archbishop Carroll received a bench technical foul to start the contest and the Cardinals missed both free throws and committed a turnover on the resulting first possession of the game that the Lions even\tually captured 46-26.  It was the home opener and conference opener for the Bishop Ireton varsity girls Thursday.

Archbishop Carroll, behind the shooting of junior Alisa Burger and the defense of Dominque Powell,  jumped out to a 14-8 lead after one quarter. A 12-4 run ballooned the advantage to 26-12 and the half ended 26-13 with a free throw from Jasmine Conkright.

The third quarter opened with a more aggressive Cardinal team in a 2-3 zone. Senior Laura Hart hit  a twisting lay up to draw Ireton to 26-15 but Carroll’s Powell stepped up her domination in the paint and blocked Ireton shots on consecutive possessions.  She also was strong inside with rebounding and punished Ireton with layups and put backs to push the lead to 36-17 after three quarters.  The teams played evenly through the final quarter with the contest beyond reach.

Reeme Lghaoui led the home team with 12 points.  Little rest for the Cardinals (2-2, 0-1) as they travel to Flint Hill for an after contest before heading to powerhouse Good Counsel Tuesday.  The girls return home Wednesday to host Don Bosco, Cristo Rey on Wednesday break heading home for the Christmas break.
