WCAC Soccer honors Cardinal Players, Coach

Cardinals' Varsity head Coach Marianna Sullivan of Lorton, Virginia, was WCAC coach of the year

The Washington Athletic Conference recently announced the all-conference selections for boys and girls soccer for the 2010 season.  Bishop Ireton was represented by 5 boys and 6 girls while third-year girls varsity coach, Marianna Sullivan was selected by her peers as the WCAC coach of the year.

Dan O’Keefe was tapped as a first team selection on the boys’ squad. The lanky senior team captain from Alexandria was the club’s leading scorer and unquestioned leader on the field and off it.  Senior Cameron Foster, a letterwinner for the four years, was selected to the league’s second team, while junior Nick Galdos and seniors Cameron Wallace and Eyobell Behre were honorable mentions for the Cards.

The girls’ Katrina Guillou was a second time selection to the WCAC first team. The junior from Fort Washington, Maryland, overcame nagging injuries during the season to lead the Cardinals to their first winning campaign since 2005.  She was joined by a pair of freshmen, Adrienne Maday and Natalie Barrow, who were voted to the league’s third team by the varsity coaches.  Also recognized were juniors Anna Wissler, a transfer from North Carolina, Hannah Thomas, and sophomore Emily Gupton as honorable mention selectees.

The girls’ squad was also honored with the coaches’ selection of Marianna Sullivan as the conference coach of the year.  Sullivan inherited a team that failed to win a game in her inaugural campaign, yet battled Bishop McNamara into penalty kicks on a raw, wet, gray November afternoon for the opportunity to play the top seeded Bishop O’Connell the next day.  “I knew we had a special coach that could coax that sort of effort from a team that had not enjoyed a win all year.” remarked athletic director Bill Simmons. ” So I am not surprised that in her third year her team was the first to beat top ranked Good Counsel, and did it convincingly.  And, if you look closely at the all conference selections, they are great players all returning next fall for the Cardinals.  She definitely deserved this honor and I am glad that her peers agreed.”

Stags Dunk Boys, Girls Splash Elizabeth Seton in Swimming Opener

Bishop Ireton tangled with one of the area’s premier swim programs in the DeMatha Stags this week, falling 124-46 in dual meet action, while the girls blitzed Elizabeth Seton 109-61 at the St Albans pool on November 18th.

While DeMatha dominated the boys event, Ireton’s Kevin Grant was the lone winner for the Cardinals in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.07.   The strong competition did have its upside however, as Ireton’s 200 medley relay recorded a Catholic National and Metro qualifying time of 1:47.90, with  Michael Clark, Brian McGinty, Kevin Grant, and Tommy Corridon achieving that milestone in the season opener. Likewise, Clark qualified for the 50 free and 100 freestyle, Grant’s breaststroke time set him up for the two prestigous meets.  Brian McGinty likewise qualified for both events with his times in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

The girls meet was a successful one for the veteran squad. Three relays recorded Metro and Catholic National-qualifying times, including the 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle.  Maddie Zeigler, Liz Collins, Saskia Kroesen, and Allison Wulff qualified in the medley, Kelly Palmer and Laura Becht joined Kroesen and Ziegler to qualify in both freestyle relays.  Palmer won a pair of individual races for Ireton both the 100 and 200 yard freestyle, while Kroesen took the 50 and 500 freestyle events.

Individually Liz Collins qualified for the Metro and Catholic Nationals in the 1o0 yard butterfly and breaststroke, Kroesen in the 50/500 free, Palmer in the 200 free, Wulff in the 200 IM, and Zeigler in both the 100 yard butterfly and back stroke.

The dive competition was held separately due to restrictions in a number of pools.  The Cardinals Nick Attiliis finished 4th while Alex Branham and Sarah Fyffe finished first and second in the girls diving event.

The Cardinals return to action on December 3rd at Georgetown Prep where they will tangle with diocesan rivals, Paul VI and Bishop O’Connell, in what is sure to be an exciting and action packed evening of swimming.

Boys Third, Girls Fourth in WCAC Cross Country Championships

Bishop Ireton’s cross country team, perhaps running on emotion from the recent loss of their assistant coach, Rob Sagar, posted their strongest finish in recent years at the WCAC cross country championships at Lake Fairfax.  The Cardinals boys’ team, led by Liam O’Connor’s 17:44, 7th place finish and Michael Andersen’s 17:57, 10th place finish, both all conference qualifying finishes, grabbed a 3rd place slot (88) behind champions Gonzaga (26) and runner up Good Counsel (39). They far outdistanced Bishop O’Connell, (123) Ryken (160) St Johns (170) and DeMatha (180).  PVI, McNamara and Carroll rounded out the boys standings.    Ireton’s Nick Manzek finished 19th in a time of 18:32, Murphy Costigan chased him home with a 18:47, good for 21st, while Dan Burns (19:24) and Arthur Stier, (19:41) rounded out the boys’ finishers.

Senior Madelyn Thomas paced the varsity girls 4th place finish with her 13th spot in a time of 22:20, while junior Aubrey Gartlan was hot on her heels at 22:56, good for a 18th place finish. Alex Georgi, (23:15) was 25th, while Marin Nolan finished 28th, Shannon Gordon 30th in times of 23:59 and 24:06 respectively.  Katarina Frustaci (24:36) was 34th and Margeret Nealon 36th in a time of 24:34.   DJO won the event with 19 points, Good Counsel was second (54) while St Johns posted a third spot (111) edging Ireton with 114.

In the boys’ JV meet, Ireton captured a third place team finish on the strength of Conor Pearson’s 5th place finish (19:01) , Kevin Corcoran, (18th, 19:54), Chris Adelson (35th, 20:43) Nick Gaietto (36th, 20:44), Edward Nguyen (42nd, 21:02) , Sean Pili (28th, 21:03) and Dan Cummins (45th, 21:18) who nosed out teammate Andrew Baehre at 21:20.  As with the varsity meet, Gonzaga won the JV event, Good Counsel was second.

The girls’ JV meet was dominated by Bishop O’Connell, who took the top 5 spots.   Ireton’s Sarah Fyffe grabbed the 6th place in a time of 23:53 while Loren Gant was 8th in a time of 24:21.  Mary Johnson, (11th, 24:49)   Anna Chelak, (30th, 26:53), Kathryn Gasper (31st, 26:56), Katarina Axenfeld (32nd, 26:57), and Annie Barletta at 36th in a time of 27:03 all helped the Cardinals to a second place finish, where they edged PVI by a single point, 76-77.

In the youngsters race, the Cardinals’ freshmen, led by Jack Leyden, the race’s first place finisher with a time of 19:04, snared the top honors with the Cardinals winning the boys freshmen team title.  Micheal LoGrande was 4th with a time of 19:48, Patrick Coyle toured the course in 20:15 to earn a 6th place finish while Steven Gottliev was 8th with a time of 20:26.  Teammates Jack Jarvis (22:40, 27th), Joe Simko (23:11, 29th) Joseph Sardegna (23:50, 41) and Connor Beveridge (23:55, 44th) rounded out the scoring for the freshmen boys.  No girls freshmen race was reported.

Broad Run Skates Past Cardinals in Season Opener, 4-2

Robert Chastain made 43 saves on a busy night for the Cardinal netminder

The Bishop Ireton Varsity Ice Hockey team opened the season last Friday night at Kettler Capitals Iceplex with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of a tough Broad Run squad.  It was the first league game for the Cardinals, who return to the Varsity level after playing JV for the last several seasons.

The Spartans opened the scoring, netting the first goal less than a minute into the contest, and never looked back.  Down 3-0, the Cardinals scored their first goal of the evening in the second period on a slap shot from Tom Cyrnak, off of a nice assist by Nick Tangora.  Soon after, though, Broad Run restored the 3-goal margin which proved to be too much for the struggling Cardinals offense.  Reid Yager scored unassisted late in the third period to provide the final margin.  Robert Chastain was stellar in net, stopping 43 of 47 shots from the high-powered Spartan offense.

The Cardinals season continues on Friday, December 3rd, at 3:45 pm at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, against Bishop O’Connell.

Oars in the Water for Fall Crew

Bishop Ireton Varsity Crew competed at the Head of the Occoquan on Sunday, November 7, 2010.   The Cardinals sent two boats into competition on the Occoquan, including one boat in the Women’s Youth Eight race at 10: 30 am, and another in the Men’s Youth Eight race at 1:15 pm.  The competitive field at the Head of the Occoquan included top ranked rowers from all over the East Coast including a few from our league.  This regatta continues to bring spectacular teams to this competition.

“Racing today was exactly what we needed,” Head Coach Eric Gehrke was cited as saying, “There was a large field and we were in the mix of it. Now we must move forward and aim to have our best rows also translate to competitive times.”   Lineups have been tweaked as the team has moved through the fall, and practiced very hard.
The Women’s Youth Eight that finished 15th in a field of twenty-five consisted of: Julie Roth (coxswain), Meredith Ramey, Alison Lee , Michelle Bouquet, Catherine Burgin, Carolyn Riegel, Brianna Burke, Emilia Paynor, and Reagan Miller.
The Men’s eight race that finished 14th in a field of twenty-three consisted of: Kevin Shoop (coxswain), Justin Roczniak, Stephen Barlow, Neil Heitbrink, Jimmy Fonda, Carter Constantino, Jake Hayhurst, Billy Colbert, and Nicolas Warner.
Both boats finished in very respectable times ahead of last year’s performance. Coaches were very proud of the effort

Soccer season comes to bruising end, 3-1

Midfielder Anna Wissler joined the Cardinals in 2010 from Camp Lejeune High School

The 2010 girls’ soccer season hopefully will be remembered as the start of a return to the top of the WCAC for Bishop Ireton girls’ soccer.  It certainly will be remembered for the physical struggles with Bishop O’Connell, particularly on this day with the semifinal game in conference championship play. The 3-1 win by the Knights doesn’t reflect the battle the clubs waged for the third time this year.

Striker Morgan Reuther staked O’Connell to a 1-0 lead with 24:12 to play in the first half, but Ireton responded late in the first to tie the score at 1-1.  Junior Hannah Thomas launched a direct kick from 30 yards away that hit the crossbar and once again the alert Cardinals banged home the loose ball, this time Gabby Barowski in the right place at the right time.  Thomas had a strong effort for the Cards; she patrolled the entire field on this day, denying the Knights repeatedly in the defensive zone, stopping the attack at midfield, and even putting a great header on goal from a set play corner kick.

Barowski broke free momentarily with under 30 seconds remaining in the opening half, but speedy junior’s shot went just wide left as the visiting Cardinals clearly had the Knights on their heels as the first half ended.

The physical play continued in the final period as Karina Azar was lost to the redbirds with a possibly broken wrist, all conference forward Katrina Guillou hobbled by a  reoccuring ankle injury.  Bishop O’Connell gave territory grudgingly in the game with junior Shannon Nasca anchoring the Knights defense and the midfielders checking Ireton relentlessly.

Junior Caroline Leary broke free at 49:45 mark in the game to regain the advantage for the Knights at 2-1 and the rugged O’Connell defense bore down.

Guillou returned in the second half for Ireton, but the midfield was slow going and the parries into Knight territory yielded fewer quality scoring opportunities for the Cards.  Reuther, an all conference performer for the home squad, put the game out of reach at the 75th minute when she scored her second goal of the day for O’Connell.

“We played a talented opponent well on their home field with some major contributors missing.” commented Coach Marianna Sullivan. “Adrienne Maday was out with her grandmother’s funeral, Katrina’s reinjured ankle slowed her, and Karina’s injury were tough to overcome. I am proud of the girls today and this season, no doubt about that. They are fighters.”

The loss ended a winning campaign overall for Bishop Ireton, (10-9-1) their first since the 2005 season when they lost in the WCAC finals

Junior Gabby Goddette is one of 16 varsity lettermen expected to return for the 2011 season

to St Johns.  Kelsey O’Leary, Sarah Olsen, Jess Bobick, Joanna Faletti, and Caroline Boddie played their final game for Bishop Ireton, but the Cardinals will return a wealth of experience and talent for the 2011 campaign.

Youngsters lead Cardinals to Semifinals, 2-1

Junior Katrina Guillou led Cardinals in comeback 2-1 win at Holy Cross

Few Ireton fans looked forward to their second trip to Kensington in five days following a grueling 2-1 loss to end the regular season. The setback dropped the Cardinals from a third seed, and a home playoff game, to a tie for the 5th seed, with a trip back to 4th seeded Holy Cross.

An early Freeman goal gave the Tartans a lead and in a tightly marked game the Cardinals went to half time with few good scoring chances despite playing a relatively good period of soccer.

Freshman Natalia Barrow broke the ice for the Cardinals who played with a “not-to-be-denied” sense of determination in the second half. Slowly the field seemed to tilt downhill for Ireton as they won the loose balls, juniors Hannah Thomas and Nicole Bond turning back the Holy Cross attacks.  Jess Bobick played a strong game in net, including making a pair of incredible saves after going down and stopping shots from point blank range.

But it was a direct kick by Adrienne Maday from 25 yards away that gave the Cardinals their best opportunity to take the lead.  The freshman hit a cannon of a shot right on goal that overwhelmed the keeper who gamely saved the ball, but yielded a juicy rebound that Karina Azar slammed into the back of the net with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Coach Marianna Sullivan’s charges continued to press the attack, eating valuable time and driving the Tartans back deep in their own end to constitute their attack. When they managed to get a shot on goal in the games late moments, the midfielders and defense kept the shots routine for the senior goalkeeper.

The 2-1 win propels Ireton to a third match this season with rival Bishop O’Connell Thursday in Arlington.  The Knights have topped Ireton in their first two meetings of the season, but the winner of this encounter earns a trip to Germantown and the WCAC finals on Saturday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex.  Gametime Thursday is expected to be 3pm, championship Saturday is a 6pm kickoff.

St Johns Rallies Late to Nip Cards in WCAC Soccer tourney, 2-1

Senior captain Dan O’Keefe’s long drive staked the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead early in the game and Eyobell Behre and company held the defensive end with freshman Spencer Amarantides in goal on a windy November afternoon in Washington DC. Both squads had a number of opportunities, but the Cardinals luck with with them for the first 66 minutes of the contest.

But as the sun waned in the autumn sky, a Cadets shot caught Amarantides off balance, and while he made the save, he stumbled backward and, in the linesman’s judgment, crossed the goal line to give the host team a tie, a call the Cards did not dispute. A little more than 4 minutes remaining in the first round WCAC championship playoff game, St Johns capitalized on an Ireton lapse and grabbed a 2-1 lead.

Ireton counterattacked, beginning with O’Keefe’s long drive from the center circle that sailed straight but just high over the crossbar to begin the Cardinals rally.  Alan Boyce rang a screaming shot off the far right corner of the goal posts in the game’s final minute, but the ball caroomed away and St Johns hung on for their second win in three encounters with the Cardinals this fall. The Cadets move on to second seeded Gonzaga on Tuesday while the Cardinals headed home to Alexandria, the 2010 campaign in the books.
