Cardinals outslug Ryken on Senior Day, 3-2

Senior day for five Cardinal soccer players went from festive to apprehensive as St Mary Ryken smothered the Ireton offense before the second fireworks erupted.  After a scoreless first period, Knights’ senior Alysse Houston capitalized on a Cardinal turnover in their own end and streaked in alone to put Ryken up 1-0 at 42:43.

Ireton’s Katrina Guillou responded at 48:15 to tie the game on a spectacular move into the box and a blistering shot in the corner.   Houston came back a off another defensive lapse and staked St Mary’s to their last lead of 2-1. Sophomore defender Nicole Bond launched a long direct kick at the 59:23 mark over the head of junior keeper Sarah Dvorak and knotted the contest at 2-2.

Junior Hannah Thomas, a steady defender, leaped high on a corner kick from Adriene Maday to head the go-ahead goal in the net at the 65:49 mark and the Cardinals held on for the much needed win to keep them in pursuit of a third seed in the upcoming conference tournament.  The Cardinals held the statistical edge in the game with 14 shots to 7 for the Knights, an 8-5 advantage for shots on goal,  and a 3-1 corner kick lead.

Ireton (8-5-1)  finishes the regular season on the road with a rematch with preseason favorite, Good Counsel in Olney, then travels to Kensington next Friday to end the campaign at Holy Cross.  Tournament play will begin on Monday, Nov 8th with play-in games, the Cardinals will enter the fray on Tuesday with quarterfinal action.

Cardinal Water Polo at Naval Academy Tournament

Cardinal Polo attended this year’s Annapolis Water Tournament at the Naval academy. They played 4 games, and walked away 2-2. This was a very good learning and bonding experience for the team. The last game of the day was a landside victory over the traditional rivals from Landon. Afterwards, the team enjoyed a well earned dinner in downtown Annapolis. Coach John Gullickson was very proud with the team’s performance. Cardinal Water Polo is always looking for members, and for anyone interested, it is great cross training for any sport.

Harriers busy winning boys’ City title, running Georgetown Prep meet

Arriving at the midpoint of their season, the Bishop Ireton cross country team competed in both the Alexandria City Championship and Georgetown Prep Invitational over the past two weeks. Both meets served as a litmus test for the squad as they approach the Virginia State Catholic Championship on October 26th down in Newport News. “Our early meets were all held on pretty challenging courses and that was done to better prepare us for the easier courses down the road”, Ireton head coach Brad Byrnes explained. “Of course, not everyone was happy with their slower times but I assured them that things would look different once they finally raced on a flatter course”. Things were definitely different as they took to the relatively flat course at Episcopal High School where the City Championship was held on October 7th as the boys took home their first City Championship since 2005.

Squaring off against cross-town rivals TC Williams, St. Stephen’s/St. Agne’s and Episcopal, the boys varsity squad knew that they had the depth to make it a close race and the final result proved just that. The Ireton boys won the title by a mere 5 points which was close enough for most coaches to hold off on any predictions until the final results were posted. Both Mike Andersen and Liam O’Connor finished 4th and 5th, respectively, to lead the Cardinals in scoring. Nick Manzek, Murphy Costigan and Sam Ferrara rounded out the top 5 scorers for the varsity squad.  The boys impressively placed all five of their scorers within the top ten which was the deciding factor in the race.  Coach Byrnes said, “I told them all week that this race was going to be won by the third, fourth and fifth place scorers from each team. Early on at the mile mark our guys were further back than I expected them to be but I had faith that they would finish strong and they did. I’m very happy that it was a true team victory”. Additionally, the Ireton JV boys’ squad won their first ever title at the City Championship in dominating fashion as they narrowly missed a 1 through 5 “sweep” with a team score of 17 points. The Cardinals were led in the JV race by race champion Connor Pearson, Jack Leyden (2nd) and Dan Burns (3rd). Kevin Moran and Steven Gottlieb rounded out the top five for Ireton.

On the ladies side, Aubrey Gartlan (10th place) led the Cardinals once again to a third place finish overall. Alex Georgi, Marin Nolan, Sarah Fyffe and Katarina Frustaci rounded out the scorers for Ireton. The additions of Nolan, Shannon Gordon and Georgi have significantly improved the girls’ team this season. In the girls JV race, Eva Irwin led the way for Ireton as she was followed by Mary Johnson, Loren Gant, Annie Barletta and Catherine Schreiber. The girls JV squad finished second to Episcopal HS.

The Georgetown Prep Invitational was held over homecoming weekend and featured a new course over the beautiful grounds surrounding the school. The new course proved tough as many racers found themselves running slower times than usual that led many to believe that the course was both over 5000 meters and not intended for such a large meet. Senior Murphy Costigan explained, “ At a few points during the race I was reduced to a slow jog or even a walk because of all the runners out there. The course just wasn’t wide enough to allow for a fair race”. Despite the course issues the lady Cardinals finished 14th out of 33 teams and the boys finished 7th out of 34. The lady Cardinals were led once again by Junior Aubrey Gartlan while Junior Liam O’Connor led the boys.

In one of the few meets during the course of the season that featured a freshman race, the Ireton freshmen boys finished 4th out of 26 teams as they defeated all other private schools entered including the purple eagles of Gonzaga. The freshman girls team included only three racers so they were unable to score in the team standings but Loren Gant, Annie Barletta and Maria Manzek turned in great performances on the day.

The Ireton harriers will race next at the Virginia State Catholic Championship in Newport News on October 26th as the boys try to defend their first place finish from last year and the ladies try to improve upon their second place finish.

Cardinals win big in ISL Soccer contest, 4-0 at Episcopal

(reprinted from the EHS website)

The Episcopal girls’ varsity soccer team faced its toughest opponent to date as it hosted Bishop Ireton this afternoon on Hoxton Field. The Cardinals, who improved to 6-4-1 overall with a 4-0 victory over the Maroon, entered today’s match fresh off of a stunning 3-0 win over previously undefeated and #1 ranked WCAC powerhouse Good Counsel; while the Maroon have struggled to find results despite a strong work ethic and now stand 2-6-0 on the season.

Bishop Ireton caught EHS on their heels early in the game, tallying their first goal just one minute into regulation. After 18 minutes, the scoreboard read 2-0 in favor of the visitors as they took advantage of extra time and space in the midfield. The Cardinals skillfully possessed the ball throughout the majority of the first half, but were held scoreless for a total of 36 minutes after scoring their second goal due to a patient and composed defensive effort from the Maroon.

It wasn’t until 26 minutes remaining in the game that the Cardinals expanded their lead to 3-0. The visitors eventually snuck in a fourth goal on a largely disputed scramble after a corner kick in the 73rd minute.

Aided by the leadership of junior Emma Holt (VA), sophomore Ali Alford, and seniors Cameron Baker and Taylor Wilson, sophomore Julia Baker surpassed her previous career-high of eight saves to record 12 stellar saves in 80 minutes. Sophomore Erin Montz turned in one of her finer performances of the year, as did classmate Haley Lyerly, whose speed and tenacious pursuit of loose balls earned EHS some of its best scoring opportunities.

The Maroon hope to take advantage of a three-day break before returning to competition, and look forward to being rejoined by several ill and/or injured players when they take on the Snails of Madeira on Saturday at 1:30pm. Saturday’s game opens up a streak of six ISL matches, including five divisional games, that will conclude the regular season.

Katrina Guillou,  Anna Wissler, and Gabby Barowski scored for the Cardinals, Wissler scored a pair of goals in the contest.

Ireton snaps St Johns’ 84-game WCAC dual match streak, 5-4

Bishop Ireton girl’s varsity tennis team met St. John’s, 2-time WCAC Champions, for their second match of the season at St. John’s home courts yesterday, this time the Cardinals dealt the Cadets a stunning 5-4 upset.  Ireton’s win broke an 84-game winning streak of dual matches for St Johns in the WCAC.

Following a 4-5 loss to St. John’s last month in the first match of two for the season the Cardinal ladies were ready and determined to bring home a win.

The first two singles players off the courts were Mary Rose White with a (0-8) loss at #1 and Monica Zakaria’s (3-8) defeat at #2, but this did not sway the team’s mission.Next off Christy Macey won (8-2) at #3 and stands undefeated to date. #5 Natalia Spinetto delivered a (8-5) win followed by #6 senior Allie Laclede with a (9-7) win. Last on the court #4 Nicole Williams won (8-6) to her opponent who had edged out Williams at their first faceoff in September.William’s win meant the Redbirds only needed one win at doubles to take the match.

The match at 4-2 after singles play gave Ireton the edge they needed. Doubles team Monica Zakaria and Nicole Williams finished first with a (1-8) loss at #1, but the #2 team of Christy Macey and Mary Rose White got the needed win at (6-1) to take the match. Literally playing in the dark Natalia Spinetto and Allie Laclede fought on to a (3-6) loss at #3.

Ireton’s win over St. John’s broke an eight year streak of losses by the Redbirds to this WCAC powerhouse. Coach Sloper said of her Cardinal team, “I am so proud of them. They amaze me every match. Nicole’s big win was key for our match today. She got her rematch and won. She played great.”

The Ireton ladies came determined to break St. John’s winning streak and the proved that today. Bishop Ireton now stands 7-3 in conference play.

Late Goal Lets Tartans escape with a tie, 1-1

Holy Cross senior Kelsey Reilly banged in a rebound inside the box with under 5 minutes left to let the Tartans escape with a 1-1 draw in Alexandria Tuesday. The game, hastily moved to Fannon Field’s AstroPlay 2000 after rains left soggy Kensington fields unplayable, generally was dominated by the Cardinals, particularly in the first half.

Ireton’s Katrina Guillou made a spectacular move in the offensive zone, receiving and instantly popping a pass over the defender’s head while deftly stepping around her and drilling a shot to the upper left hand corner of  the goal to put Ireton up 1-0.  The lead held up as the Cardinals pressed the attack rolling up a 10-3 shots on goal three quarters of the way through the contest.

It was a foul in the Ireton defensive end that set up a direct kick, which would lead to the trouble in the box that gave Holy Cross the rare scoring opportunity and the Tartan senior didn’t disappoint the purple clad faithful who journeyed to Virginia for the contest on a blustery fall day.

The young Ireton squad continues to dazzle their coaches and soccer fans alike. They impressed Holy Cross mentor Nelson Abreau. “Marianna has the kids playing a superb, perfect tactical game. The team is impressive, they dominated the first half.  We made some changes at halftime, but this is a very good team Coach Sullivan has playing very well.”

Hannah Thomas, Nicole Bond, and Helena Barber anchor the Cardinals defensively in front of a pair of senior goalkeeper Joanna Faletti and Jess Bobeck.  It was well into the second half before the Tartans registered a shot on net.

A crew of young players surround  Guillou, including newcomer junior Anna Wissler, a North Carolina all state player who  transferred from Camp Lejeune High School and underclassmen Adrienne Maday, Gabriella Goddette, Ciana Puglise, among a strong cast of veteran seniors and youngsters in the Ireton program.  Wissler drew praise recently from her coach, “Anna has continued to gain confidence and become comfortable with what we want her to do for the team.  She is making a great impact on the game and is one reason for the success we are enjoying.”

The Cardinals host the always dangerous St Johns on Friday before heading up Quaker Lane for a midseason non conference tilt with Episcopal on Tuesday while the JV travel to Carroll.  Ireton has a three-game winning streak over the 2009 WCAC finalists, but the Cadets are coming back from injuries and always make a late season push as tournament time approaches. Gametime is set for 4pm.

Bullis’ Jones carries Bulldogs past Cardinals, 20-17

Ireton's Anthony Rivers had a busy day on both sides of the ball in 20-17 setback

Bishop Ireton unofficially ran 39 offensive plays for 223 total yards on the day, but the Bullis Bulldogs’ Kevin Jones singlehandedly  rushed 47 times for 275 yards in the homecoming 20-17 win for the hosts in Potomac, Maryland, Saturday.

The Cardinals, physically nicked up after 4 road games in the first 5 of the season, couldn’t get the defense off the field.  They had their best drive of the game to open the contest but even at that turned the ball over on downs at the Bullis 12 yardline.

The contest was closer than it could have been, thanks in part to poor special team play by the Bulldogs.  When their first drive stalled deep in their own territory, a 15 yard punt gave Ireton the opportunity to draw first blood.  But the Cardinals were held to a 38-yard field goal by Theo Daubresse and Ireton owned a 3-0 lead.

Bullis began the punishing ground game with Jones lugging the pigskin play after play. Only a Daubresse interception on the Ireton 8 stalled the Bullis drive as the first period ended.

The navy blue and gold hosts next drive would eat up 7:35, a 13-play, 83 yard drive capped off by the first of three touchdowns Jones scored, this time a 29-yard dash on a 4th and 3 effort. Again, special teams hurt the Potomac school and the snap on the PAT was bad and Bullis led, 6-3 into the half.

Fireworks were the story in the third stanza, Bullis opened with a 10-play drive to extend their advantage to 12-3 when their 2-point try failed following Jones’ 2 yard touchdown plunge.  The Cardinals responded immediately with a 5-play drive, highlighted by PJ Zingler’s 65-yard strike to Anthony Rivers, who was hauled down at the Bullis 2. Zingler would toss a 2 yard lob to Rivers, who fittingly got the score following his big play.

For one of the few times on the afternoon when Bullis went three plays and out, the punt team again put the home team in a bind, this time with a bad snap from center that the punter chased down on the Bulldog 11.

Ireton took one play, an 11-yard toss to junior Moses Webb and the Daubresse PAT had the Cardinals back in front with 14 points in two minutes of action, 17-12 with 4:04 left in the third quarter.

The game winning drive was typical of the afternoon for Ireton. Bullis rode the rushing of Kevin Jones on the 16-play, 64-yard touchdown drive that consumed nearly 7 minutes. Jones’ third TD of the day, another 2 yarder gave the homecoming crowd a lead that would not be overcome. The two point PAT completed the day’s scoring.

Ireton was unable to mount a sustained drive and the IAC school ate another 5 and half minutes of the clock as the fourth quarter raced away from the Alexandrians. For the day, Bullis had the ball for more than 34 minutes in the 48 minute contest and the defense appeared to  be game but clearly tiring by the final quarter.

For Bishop Ireton (1-4), the disappointing first half of the season, with the frequent away games, comes to a close and the Cardinals look forward to playing 4 of the final 5 contests in the “friendly confines” of Fannon Field.

It won’t get easier, as more Bulldogs visit Alexandria, this week the St Albans variety, winners over WCAC opponents Bishop O’Connell, St Mary Ryken, and Bishop McNamara so far in this season.  Game time is set for 2:30pm, with an extra accomodation for the SAT’s next Saturday morning.

Scoring:

Cardinals Stun Top Ranked Good Counsel, 3-0

Bishop Ireton (5-3, 5-2) scored it’s biggest win in recent memory with a surprising 3-0 upset of previously unbeaten Good Counsel (8-1-1, 5-1-1) at Fannon Field Friday.  Katrina Guillou gave Ireton an early 1-0 lead in the first half, then the all conference forward  scored Ireton’s third goal around Karina Azar goal in  a first half avalanche of goals as the Cardinals soared to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Falcons played a tougher second half, but Joanna Faletti was not seriously tested as the senior goalkeeper turned away all 8 shots on goal and quarterbacked the defense, lead by juniors Hannah Thomas and Helena Barber, to stifled the high flying Falcons.

Ireton put 9 shots on net for the game and controlled the play for much of the contest with crisp passing and ball control. “We played to our potential today.” explained Coach Marianna Sullivan. “We have great respect for Good Counsel, but we knew what we needed to do to be successful and the girls went out and did it. We talked about what to expect in the second half and the team played with confidence the entire game.”

The Cardinals return to action next Tuesday when they head to Kensington, Maryland for a JV/varsity doubleheader with the Academy of the Holy Cross. Gametime is 4pm for varsity match and JV follows.

Senior Joanna Faletti's shutout led the Cardinals to upset of top ranked Good Counsel, 3-0 in Alexandria.
